Mobile operators in Burundi are preparing to introduce commercial 5G services starting in July 2024, as outlined in the “Fifth Generation Deployment Roadmap mobile (5G) in Burundi” released by the Telecommunications Regulatory and Control Agency (ARCT BURUNDI). The roadmap details the plans for the deployment of ultra-broadband in the country.
To facilitate the rollout of 5G, the ARCT intends to allocate each operator a continuous band of 60 to 100 MHz in the sub-6 GHz frequency range, as well as a minimum of 800 MHz in the millimeter wave bands, which operate above 6 GHz. The regulator aims to release and make available the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands by December 2023. Testing of 5G technology will be permitted starting from January 2024.
The introduction of 5G in Burundi is expected to address the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity and support the government’s ambitions for digital transformation. In line with these objectives, the country recently secured a funding of USD 50 million from the World Bank. This financial support will be instrumental in bolstering the foundations of the digital economy in Burundi.
With the advent of 5G, Burundi can anticipate improved network capabilities, enhanced data transfer speeds, and greater reliability in wireless communications. This technology holds significant potential to foster economic growth, innovation, and improved digital services across various sectors in the country. As the preparations for commercial deployment progress, Burundian consumers can look forward to reaping the benefits of advanced connectivity provided by 5G technology.
