Ethiopia’s Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration has made a significant fuel price adjustment, causing a major shift in the country’s fuel costs.
As of today, the price of a liter of petrol has been revised to 77.79 Ethiopian Birr (Ksh203), a substantial increase from the previous price of 15.76 Ethiopian Birr (Ksh40). This represents a more than fivefold increase in petrol prices.
Additionally, white diesel now stands at 79.75 Ethiopian Birr (Ksh209) per liter, and kerosene is priced at 76.75 Birr (Ksh201) per liter.
The decision to end the government subsidy on fuel prices comes after over a year of support, raising questions about the timing of this decision, especially considering the challenging cost of living conditions for the majority of Ethiopians. This move, coupled with existing price inflation across various goods, is expected to exert a significant economic burden on Ethiopia.
