3 Suspects Arrested for Vandalizing Safaricom Cables in Emali

Detectives in Emali, Makueni County have arrested three suspects and recovered a consignment of data cables believed to have been vandalized.

The cables, which belong to mobile communications service provider Safaricom, were recovered in a Toyota Probox at Kyumbi along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Saturday. The vehicle was headed for the black market.

The arrest followed a report filed at Emali police post by a guard who noticed that the cables along Simba cement area had been vandalized. Detectives who were dispatched to the scene intercepted the motor vehicle and arrested the three suspects.

The suspects have been identified as Cosmas Mutuku, Dominic Bosire, and Mulwa Nguthu, who was the driver of the vehicle. They are currently in custody being questioned for more details into their trade, before being arraigned in court on Monday.

The vandalism of Safaricom cables has been a major problem in recent months, causing frequent internet and voice outages in parts of the country. The arrests of these three suspects are a welcome development, and hopefully it will deter others from engaging in this illegal activity.

The police have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity to the authorities, and to be vigilant against cable theft.
