A Unique Jamhuri Day Celebration in Mombasa as Governor Abdulswamad Nassir Extends Compassion to Prisoners

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir visit Jela Baridi Mombasa

Mombasa, 12/12/2023 Jamuhuri Day

In a distinctive Jamhuri Day celebration, Mombasa Governor Hon. Abdulswamad Nassir, alongside fellow leaders including Hon. Bady Twalib and Hon. Rashid Bedzimba, showcased a novel approach to festivities by extending a compassionate hand towards the incarcerated. The County Government marked the occasion by visiting Jela Baridi Mombasa, where they pardoned petty offenders, emphasizing the theme of redemption and second chances.

Governor Nassir, accompanied by Mombasa County MCAs, personally engaged with the prisoners, paying fines and securing the release of individuals facing sentences of less than 6 months, particularly for offenses such as driving without a license, obstruction, touring without uniform, and walking without ID. The move aims to give these offenders an opportunity to reintegrate into society.

This event follows a trend set by Governor Nassir’s administration over the past three months, wherein NHIF medical cover has been provided under the #MombasaCare initiative to prisoners serving sentences of more than one year. Going beyond conventional measures, Nassir has directed the Department of Health to establish a methadone program in Kingorani, addressing the issue of drug abuse among prisoners and aiming to reduce recidivism.

The Governor’s holistic approach towards penal reform and the well-being of inmates underscores a commitment to building a more inclusive and rehabilitative justice system in Mombasa.
