Azimio party has de-whipped its member of parliament Sabina Chege for allegedly siding with the ruling government of Kenya and failing to support the party’s decision-making process.
The decision was made in a party meeting held on Wednesday, where the party leadership accused Deputy Minority Whip Sabina Chege of going against the party’s interests and supporting the government on critical issues, including the recent controversial anti-government protests.
The party leader, who spoke to the media after the meeting, said that the decision to de-whip Sabina Chege was not taken lightly but was necessary to send a clear message to other party members that the party’s interests come first.
“We have been closely monitoring the conduct of Sabina Chege, and we have established that she has been consistently supporting the government’s position on key issues, including the recent Azimio demonstrations, despite the party’s stand,” the leader said.
The move has elicited mixed reactions, with some party members supporting the decision, while others have criticized it, calling it undemocratic and against the principles of freedom of speech and association.
Sabina Chege, on her part, has expressed shock at the decision and said that she will challenge it in court. She further accused the party leadership of being intolerant of dissenting views and using underhand tactics to suppress the voice of the opposition.
The de-whipping of National Assembly Deputy Minority Whip Sabina Chege comes at a time when political temperatures are high in the country, with the recent Azimio Kenya Kwanza talks.
