Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a man suspected to be the mastermind behind the theft of mobile phones in the city.
The suspect, Jeremiah Mbugua, was arrested following a raid at his second-hand mobile phone shop at California House along Gaborone Street in Nairobi.
During the raid, detectives recovered hundreds of stolen phones, as well as a software installation device, external storage devices, and universal flushing device interface gadgets popularly known as “ndongois.”
The ndongois are used to wipe the data from stolen phones, making it difficult for the owners to track them down.
Mbugua is currently in custody assisting detectives with investigations. He is expected to be arraigned in court in due course.
The DCI has urged members of the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police. They have also warned phone thieves that they will be brought to book.
