Ex-Kenya Museums Boss and 3 Others Arrested in Kes. 490m Scandal

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has made significant strides in combating corruption in Kenya with the arrest of four suspects, including the former Director General of National Museums of Kenya, Dr. Mzalendo Kibunjia.

The arrests come in connection with an embezzlement of Kes. 490 million linked to the payment of salaries to ghost employees.

Dr. Kibunjia, along with Oliver Okinyi Rabuor, an ICT Officer in the Payroll section, Wycliffe Odhiambo Ongata, an Accountant in the Payroll Section, and Oscar Mwangi, a ghost employee recruiter, have been apprehended by the anti-graft agency.

The investigation was initiated following a report received by the EACC, alleging that NMK officials were siphoning public funds through irregular salary payments to ghost employees, with the money subsequently being diverted to senior officials.

The suspects are facing a litany of charges, including conspiracy to commit corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, acquisition of proceeds of crime, and financial misconduct.

The offenses spanned between the Financial Year 2015/2016 and 2021/2022.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mr. Ingonga has concurred with the recommendations put forth by the EACC, paving the way for the suspects to be charged. As of now, they are being held in custody at Integrity Centre Police Station.
