Former Murangá Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, alongside his wife Jane Waigwe Kimani and others, finds himself behind bars at Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi after denying multiple corruption accusations.
The charges, ranging from abuse of office to money laundering, stem from alleged irregular tenders worth Kes. 562 million awarded to a company associated with them, Top Image Consultants. Wa Iria, unable to meet the Kes. 20 million bond or Kes. 10 million cash bail, remains in custody.
These accusations implicate not only the former governor and his spouse but also his brother-in-law Solomon Mutura, personal assistant Peter Muturi Karanja, and others.
Funds from the tenders were purportedly diverted to Wa Iria’s foundation and to settle his loan, while his wife and brother-in-law allegedly benefited through land purchases and holiday homes.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has initiated a civil suit to recover the misappropriated public funds in addition to the criminal charges.
