First Kenya Assembly Phones, ‘Neon Smarta’ Phones launched

Historic moment, 30 October 2023, Kenya marks significant milestone by launching its very first locally-assembled phones – first Phones launched in the country. President of the Republic of Kenya Dr. William Ruto officially opened East Africa Device Assembly Kenya and launch types of phones.

With East Africa Device Assembly Kenya management, Ministry of Information, Communications & Technology officials, Cabinet Secretary of Health and other dignitaries were present at Mavoko, Machakos County to witness the launch. This momentous occasion marked a crucial step in Kenya’s technological advancement and self-reliance.

Safaricom’s Head of Ventures and the East Africa Device Assembly Kenya (EADAK) Project lead Karanja Gichiri in press questioning said that the new phones which will be available sooner on the phone stores will retail at each Kes7,499. This move aims to make advanced mobile technology accessible to a wider population.

EADAK, in collaboration with international manufacturers, plans to produce an impressive 3 million phones annually. Mr. Joshua Chepkeony, Chairman of EADAK, emphasized the potential for growth and self-sustainability in the mobile technology sector.

However, one of the most significant outcomes of this development is the creation of employment opportunities in Kenya. EADAK’s operations are expected to generate between 200 and 500 jobs, contributing to the country’s economic growth and technological expertise. This launch marks a promising future for Kenya’s mobile technology industry, as it takes a bold step towards self-reliance and innovation in the global tech market.
