Government Health Officials shut down unlicensed health facilities in Mombasa

The Kenyan government, through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), has shut down 46 health facilities in Mombasa County for operating illegally. The KMPDC, along with the Mombasa County government and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), conducted inspections of health facilities to ensure compliance with registration requirements. Out of the 436 registered health facilities, 263 were inspected, resulting in the closure of 46 facilities. Three individuals were also arrested during the inspections.

Some facilities were partially closed for failing to meet the prescribed standards and norms. The closed facilities were either unregistered or unlicensed and employed unlicensed and unregistered practitioners. Compliance inspections assessed various aspects such as physical infrastructure, human resources, licensure of medical staff, and facility operations.

The public are warned against visiting unregistered health facilities and encouraged to report any such facilities. The KMPDC is working in collaboration with county governments to ensure proper service delivery to Kenyans. The Assistant Director of Medical Services in Mombasa County acknowledged staffing challenges in government health facilities but affirmed their commitment to maintaining quality services without compromise. Inspections will continue until all health facilities adhere to the established standards.
