Governors Call for Investigation into Alleged Misappropriation of 10 Billion Shillings for El Niño Response

In Kenya 21 November 2023, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir asserted that despite claims of the National Government releasing 10 billion shillings for El Niño response to the counties, the funds did not reach their intended destinations.

Governor Nassir said that the County Government of Mombasa’s reliance on its own revenue and collaboration with organizations like the Red Cross and NGOs for disaster response.

During a media press briefing, Nassir called for a thorough investigation by Parliament and the Controller of Budget into the alleged disbursement of the funds. He emphasized the need for transparency, urging authorities to clarify to the people of Kenya where the purported 10 billion shillings actually went.

Supporting Nassir’s stance, Siaya County Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo echoed the call for an investigation.

Governor Orengo specifically pointed to the need for scrutiny into the 10 billion shillings allocated for the El Niño emergency funds by President Ruto’s regime. The governors collectively seek accountability and assurance that the allocated funds serve their intended purpose in addressing the impacts of El Niño.
