Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Japhet Koome, has congratulated 800m World Athletics Champion Mary Moraa on her stunning performance in the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
Moraa, who is a Police Constable in the NPS, won the gold medal in the women’s 800m race, clocking a personal best time of 1:56.03. She finished ahead of Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain (1:56.34) and Athing Mu of the United States (1:56.61).
Moraa’s victory was Kenya’s first gold medal in the women’s 800m at the World Athletics Championships since Janeth Jepkosgei won in 2009.
In a meeting with Moraa at NPS headquarters on Wednesday, Koome congratulated her on her achievement and urged her to continue to uphold discipline and shun malpractices, particularly doping.
“You have made the NPS proud with your performance in Budapest. I urge you to continue to train hard and uphold discipline,” Koome said.
Moraa thanked the IG for his support and said she was motivated by his words.
“I am grateful for the support of the NPS. I will continue to train hard and represent the country in future competitions,” Moraa said.
Moraa’s victory is a major boost for the NPS, which has been struggling to maintain its image in recent years. The force has been hit by a number of scandals, including allegations of corruption and brutality.
Moraa’s achievement is a reminder that the NPS is home to some of the finest athletes in the country. It is hoped that her victory will inspire other NPS officers to pursue their dreams in sports.
The NPS has a long history of producing top athletes. In addition to Moraa, the force has also produced world champions such as David Rudisha, Asbel Kiprop, and Ezekiel Kemboi.
The NPS is committed to supporting its athletes and providing them with the resources they need to succeed. The force hopes that Moraa’s victory will inspire other athletes to join the NPS and represent the country at the highest level.
