Kericho County Assembly Initiates Motion to Impeach Governor Eric Mutai

Kericho County Governor Eric Mutai

Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has been impeached by the County Assembly, with 31 out of 47 MCAs voting in favor of the motion.

The decision comes after serious allegations against him, including gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources.

The impeachment motion was introduced by Kiprotich Rogony, the MCA for Sigowet Ward.

Initially, the assembly had expected Governor Mutai to appear and defend himself against the charges but he was absent and instead sent a legal team led by lawyer Katwa Kigen.

Although Governor Eric Mutai had reportedly obtained a court order intended to stop the impeachment proceedings, the order was not served to the assembly in time, allowing the process to continue.

The allegations against Mutai are serious and include accusations of leading a mob to seize private land in Kericho town for unauthorized use as a dumpsite, as well as coercing women into inappropriate sexual acts.

Following the vote, the assembly is expected to formally notify the Senate, which will ultimately decide Mr. Mutai’s political future.
