The 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations were held in Kwale County for the first time since Kenya’s independence, marking a significant event for the region.
The event took place at the newly constructed 10,200-seater Kwale Stadium, with President William Ruto leading the festivities. This day honors Kenya’s heroes, both past and present, who contributed to the country’s independence and development.
The event drew several dignitaries, including President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu. Notably, Deputy President nominee Kithure Kindiki also attended.
A historic moment unfolded during the celebration as Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi became the first female officer to lead the Guard of Honour at a national event, showcasing Kenya’s strides toward gender equality in key military roles.
Security was heightened across the Coast region to ensure a smooth celebration, and the event also focused on the government’s ongoing affordable housing initiative, with Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome highlighting efforts to tackle the country’s housing deficit.
Additionally, 142 heroes were honored for their outstanding contributions to various sectors, including sports, philanthropy, and culture.
