In a shocking case of criminal activity disguised as public transport, six men who have been posing as matatu operators in the Parklands area have been arrested by the Operations Support Unit (OSU) detectives.
According to Police, these individuals have been using a matatu, registration number KAQ 654A, to target unsuspecting passengers, robbing them of their valuables and even kidnapping some before abandoning them.
The arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned member of the public who witnessed a recent accident involving the gang’s matatu along Kipande Road.
The incident was a turning point that led to the capture of these criminals. The witness reported that the matatu had hit and severely damaged another vehicle before its occupants fled the scene. It was later revealed that just before the accident, the gang had kidnapped and robbed a passenger.
On the day of their arrest, the gang, pretending to be matatu operators heading to the city center, picked up a female passenger near the Kempinski Hotel. Shortly after, some of the gang members exited the matatu, leaving the woman alone with the remaining robbers.
As the group began their criminal operation, the woman screamed for help, causing the gang to panic. In the ensuing chaos, the matatu was involved in an accident, drawing the attention of a vigilant passerby.
The witness, realizing something was amiss, reported the incident to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) via officials number. Acting swiftly, a team of OSU detectives launched an operation that led to the arrest of the suspects.
The individuals taken into custody include Boniface Wachira Mwangi, Jackson Kimani Thuo, Titus Mburu Njonjo, Dennis Omondi Otieno, George Vincent Otieno, and John Waweru Njenga. Njenga was found in possession of five mobile phones and a tablet, making him a receiver of stolen property.
Police have indicated that there is still a female member of the gang who remains at large. Efforts to track her down are ongoing. In the meantime, the DCI is appealing to anyone who may have fallen victim to this group’s activities to come forward and file a report at the DCI Headquarters Operations Directorate.
