In a recent turn of events earlier today, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja expressed his disappointment over the regrettable incident in the Central Business District (CBD). Nairobi Revenue collectors conducted a raid on vendors selling eggs and smokies, leading to the confiscation of their business trolleys, laden with hot smokies and eggs.
Governor Sakaja, taking to his official social media accounts, conveyed his concerns, stating, “This is not the way to treat Nairobians as we have continually implored our officers to treat Nairobians with dignity.”
The Nairobi County government has maintained amicable relations with informal traders for a year. However, recent unfortunate incidents threatened to undermine this rapport. Governor Sakaja emphasized that disciplinary actions would be taken to address the situation.
In a move to rectify the situation, Governor Sakaja ordered the immediate release of all confiscated items. Moreover, he personally extended his apologies to the affected traders and compensated each of them with 10,000 shillings as a gesture of goodwill.
Acknowledging that some traders operated without the necessary documentation, including a Medical Certificate from Public Health, Governor Sakaja added, “Even if the traders were operating without the required documentation, they did not deserve such treatment, and we are dealing with this issue internally.”
This response from the Nairobi Governor aims to rectify the situation and demonstrate a commitment to treating all Nairobians with fairness and respect, while also ensuring public health and safety.
