Nationwide Blackout Sparks Public Outcry ‘Giza Totoro’

On 30 August 2024, Kenya was hit by a countrywide blackout at around 9:50 PM, leaving millions of citizens in the dark.
The sudden loss of electricity affected homes, businesses, and essential services across the nation. The blackout led to widespread frustration, with many Kenyans taking to social media to express their anger and concerns.

Kenyans flooded platforms like Twitter and Facebook, sharing their experiences and demanding answers from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

Some users reported being stuck in elevators, while others expressed fear for their safety, particularly in areas prone to insecurity. Many also pointed out the economic impact, especially for businesses that rely on a steady power supply.

In response to the public outcry, KPLC issued an official apology, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the outage.

The company assured the public that their engineers were working tirelessly to identify and resolve the issue. “We sincerely apologize for the disruption and assure all Kenyans that we are doing everything possible to restore power as quickly as possible,” read part of the statement from KPLC.

While the exact cause of the blackout remains unclear, the incident has once again highlighted concerns over the reliability of Kenya’s power grid. Many Kenyans are now calling for better infrastructure and more transparency from KPLC to prevent future occurrences.
