The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has responded with urgency to the emergence of two disturbing videos circulating on social media, which have the potential to incite ethnic contempt, hatred, hostility, violence, or discrimination among Kenyans.
In one of the videos, a speaker can be heard stating, “while Kikuyus are fighting Luos, Woriahs are taking over Kenya.” The second video features a speaker proclaiming, ” I will make myself part of the people who have started the struggle for the liberation of the Kikuyu. I will tell these people that our enemy is not Ruto, our enemy is the Somalis.”
Such statements, which aim to sow discord among different ethnic communities, have caught the attention of the ODPP, which is taking swift action to address the matter.
Pursuant to Article 157 (4) of the Constitution of Kenya, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Mulele Ingonga has instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mr. Amin Mohamed Ibrahim to collaborate with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to conduct thorough and expeditious investigations into the videos.
The directive mandates that the DCI and NCIC jointly investigate the origin and intent of the videos, identifying the individuals responsible for the inflammatory statements.
Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be compiled into an investigation inquiry file, which will be forwarded to the DPP Renson Ingonga for perusal and advice on the appropriate legal actions to be taken.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any content that may incite ethnic hatred or violence to the relevant authorities.
This development comes at a time when the country is working towards strengthening its national unity and fostering peaceful coexistence among its diverse ethnic communities.
