Police in Makindu have initiated a probe following the recovery of a massive consignment of suspected counterfeit brown sugar.
A total of 12,500 kgs of the brown sugar were found in a motor vehicle with registration number KCU 001N Mitsubishi FH in the Kivuthini area.
The driver of the vehicle, Ngali Mutuku, aged 33, has been taken into custody for further questioning. The suspect was found to be in possession of two different delivery notes for the consignment, which was packaged in bags bearing the branding of ‘Kwale International Sugar Company Ltd-Brown Sugar Mills.’
The handwritten manufacture and expiry dates on the bags have raised suspicions about the authenticity of the sugar.
The investigating team is currently examining the seized goods to ascertain their true nature and origin.
DCI is urging anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The public is also being advised to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity related to this matter.
