President is set to embark on a five-day working tour of the Coast region, starting on July 27th, 2023. The tour will cover important areas such as Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River Counties.
During the visit, President Ruto’s main focus will be on inaugurating, commissioning, and inspecting various government projects that aim to benefit ordinary Kenyans. These projects align with the bottom-up economic agenda, which aims to uplift the lives of the people.
Notably, there will be a special emphasis on projects in the Blue Economy and Fisheries sector in places like Mukowe, Ngao, Ukunda, and Mombasa. Grants worth over Kshs. 552 million will be issued to common interest groups to support these initiatives.
One of the significant events during the tour will be the commissioning of a fish landing site in Kilifi County. This move is expected to boost the Blue Economy and Fisheries Value Chain, creating more opportunities for the local communities.
Additionally, President Ruto will also oversee the issuance of identification documents to the Pemba community and distribute title deeds in Kilifi County, ensuring that people have proper documentation and ownership of their land.
A rededication ceremony of KNS Shupavu, the first warship refitted locally, will take place in Mombasa, demonstrating the country’s progress in the shipbuilding industry.
Moreover, the tour includes the launch of a local vehicle assembly line, which is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s economy and create employment opportunities.
President will also engage in meetings with port users and other stakeholders, recognizing the significance of the region’s ports in trade and economic development.
On the agenda is the commissioning of the rehabilitated Sailoni headworks and rubber dam, as well as inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation of water delivery systems and farm restoration works at the Tana Delta Irrigation project (TDIP). The TDIP project aims to open up 12,000 hectares of land for rice irrigation and reduce rice imports by 35%, promoting self-sufficiency and economic growth.
Throughout the tour, President Ruto will hold meetings with local leaders and residents of the region, understanding their needs and aspirations, and ensuring that development initiatives are tailored to benefit the people directly.
