Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects linked to a large-scale fraud case involving more than KSh32,250,000 ($250,000).
The suspects, Mohammed Muhamud Abdi and Bashir Gabow, the owners of Mobilix Cargo and Supplies Ltd and are accused of defrauding a group of businesspeople in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area in 2018.
According to the DCI, the suspects had allegedly promised to help the investors import clothing from China, but after receiving payments totaling over 32,250,000, they failed to deliver on their promise. On 13th August 2018, the two acknowledged receiving the substantial amount of money from the group of investors but soon after went silent.
Despite the victims making several attempts to recover their funds, including signing written agreements for a refund, the suspects made no effort to return the money or fulfill their end of the deal.
For years, the victims were left in frustration as their efforts to recover the funds yielded no results.
However, on 20th August 2024, one of the investors, who had contributed USD 100,000, decided to take further action. She wrote a detailed letter to the DCI, outlining the ordeal she and the others had endured.
Her move marked a turning point in the case, as the DCI immediately launched investigations into the matter.
Detectives from the DCI Nairobi Region Headquarters acted swiftly, and by 27th August 2024, they had tracked down and arrested the two suspects.
The suspects were subsequently arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, where they were charged with obtaining money by false pretenses.
The arrests have brought renewed hope for the defrauded investors, who have been waiting for justice for years. Many of the victims expressed relief, hoping that the case will lead to the recovery of their hard-earned money.
The DCI has assured the public that they remain committed to ensuring that justice is served for all victims of fraud and financial crime, and they urged anyone with further information about this or similar cases to come forward.
