Abraham Kithure Kindiki has recently been nominated as Kenya’s Deputy President, replacing Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by the National Assembly.
The nomination process was completed in a special session of Parliament, where all 236 MPs present voted unanimously in favor of Kindiki. Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed Kindiki’s approval, highlighting that this was an overwhelmingly supported decision in Parliament.
This nomination followed a directive from President William Ruto, who had 14 days after the deputy president’s vacancy to put forward a nominee, as per Kenya’s constitutional requirements.
Kindiki’s strong professional relationship with Ruto, dating back to when he served as Ruto’s lawyer during ICC proceedings, played a significant role in his selection. Known for his diplomatic approach and non-confrontational style, Kindiki has received broad support across Kenya’s political landscape.
While the final confirmation awaits, Kindiki’s nomination has been widely celebrated. Leaders including Governors Anne Waiguru and Muthomi Njuki expressed their support, with Waiguru praising Kindiki’s capacity to guide the country towards achieving its goals and affirming her trust in his leadership.
Interior Ministry Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also commended Kindiki for his commitment to integrity and service to Kenya.
