Kenya Kwanza MCAs calls for protest pause for President to do needful changes

Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) who back President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza Government have issued a statement expressing their concern over the recent developments in the country.

MCAs says the initial anti Finance Bill has morphed into widespread lawlessness and criminal activities which is not suitable for the country.

According to the MCAs, demonstrations initially sparked by young people have escalated, leading to looting, property destruction, and other criminal acts.

The chaos has resulted in loss of lives, injuries, and significant economic losses, with businesses and individuals suffering billions in damages and the country losing tens of billions in revenue.

The MCAs accused some political and civil society elements of exploiting the unrest to push for an unconstitutional change of government. They condemned these actions, emphasizing that the President has taken substantial steps to address concerns, including refusing to sign the Finance Bill 2024, sending a memorandum to the National Assembly to withdraw it, and dismissing the entire Cabinet to reconstitute it.

They stressed the impact of lawlessness on innocent Kenyans caught between unruly mobs and police confrontations.

The MCAs highlighted the growing frustration among Kenyans, leading some to take the law into their own hands. Business owners in Nairobi and other affected areas have begun guarding their property, warning against allowing protestors into their towns.

The MCAs reminded the public that Kenya’s Constitution grants the winner of a presidential election the mandate to form a government. They called for the President to be allowed to form a new Cabinet to tackle the nation’s challenges and reiterated that Kenya is a democratic country where an unconstitutional change of government has no place.

They urged an end to violence under the guise of peaceful protests and called for the cessation of unreasonable demands on the President and the Government, especially those lacking constitutional or legal basis.

The MCAs warned that while supporters of the Government could mobilize in defense, this would only escalate the situation. Instead, they called for patience and a resolution through the democratic process, with the next opportunity to judge the Government’s performance being the 2027 General Elections.

The MCAs’ statement comes at a critical time as Kenya grapples with ongoing unrest, calling for calm and constitutional adherence to resolve the nation’s challenges.
