Raila Odinga A Controversial Political Journey Marked by Alleged Betrayals and Self-Interest

President Ruto and ODM/Azimio leader Hon. Raila Odinga

Raila Odinga has faced sharp criticism, with allegations of betrayal and a self-centered approach to his political career, as some contend that he prioritizes personal interests over the collective welfare of his political allies and the Kenyan populace.

The characterization of Raila as a “Mtu wa Kukuwacha kwa Mataa,” as articulated by Moses Kuria, encapsulates the sentiment that after rallying a group of key politicians to support him through an election, Raila Odinga tends to use a backdoor approach to infiltrate the government when he loses, thereby leaving his team out of the political equation and tarnishing their political reputations.

Historically; In the aftermath of the 2007 elections, William Ruto, who ardently supported Raila against Kibaki, found himself marginalized during the Mkate nusu negotiations, and later in 2010, Raila Odinga who was Prime Minister dismissed Ruto from the Agricultural sector. Similarly, in 2017, after Raila lost the election, he later joined forces with Uhuru Kenyatta, leaving former allies like Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula politically stranded until seeking refuge in United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) that formed Kenya Kwanza the ruling alliance.

The pattern continued in 2022, where Raila, following his electoral defeat, distanced himself from the team that included Uhuru, Martha, Kioni, Wamalwa, Junet, Sifuna, and others who had dedicatedly aligned themselves with his political cause. This departure left his former allies perplexed and, according to critics, ashamed.

The perceived chronological betrayal paints a picture of Raila Odinga as a man primarily concerned with advancing his own political agenda, seemingly indifferent to the challenges faced by those who staunchly support him. The narrative gains strength from instances like his alleged involvement in the 2023 Anti-Government protests, where it’s claimed that lives were lost, only for him to later join the very government he had vehemently protested against.

Critics argue that this behavior underscores Raila’s self-centered disposition, asserting that he cares little for the well-being of ordinary Kenyans, and even less for those aligned with his political journey. The narrative concludes with a strong condemnation, labeling Raila Odinga as a traitor and a selfish individual with little regard for the consequences of his actions on the lives and aspirations of the Kenyan people.
