Senate Upholds Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment, Isaac Mutuma takes over Office

Nairobi, August 21, 2024 — The Senate has tonight upheld the decision of the Meru County Assembly to remove Hon. Kawira Mwangaza from her position as the Governor of Meru County.

This marks the third time that Governor Mwangaza has faced impeachment, but this time the Senate has confirmed her removal from office.

In a late-night session, Senators voted on three charges against Governor Mwangaza, which were put forward by the County Assembly of Meru. The voting results were as follows:

Charge 1: Gross Violation of the Constitution and Other Laws

  • Yes: 26
  • No: 4
  • Abstentions: 14

Charge 2: Gross Misconduct

  • Yes: 26
  • No: 2
  • Abstentions: 14

Charge 3: Abuse of Office

  • Yes: 27
  • No: 1
  • Abstentions: 14

The voting results showed a strong majority of Senators agreeing with the charges brought against the Governor.

The impeachment process was driven by allegations that Governor Kawira Mwangaza had repeatedly violated the Constitution, engaged in gross misconduct, and abused her office.

Following this decision, Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma will assume the role of acting Governor. He is expected to be sworn in as the official Governor of Meru County anytime today, August 21, 2024, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

This latest development brings an end to the tumultuous tenure of Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who has faced continuous challenges and opposition since her election.

The focus now shifts to Deputy Governor Mutuma, who will take over the leadership of Meru County amid heightened public and political scrutiny.
