In a historical finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands captured the final gold medal in athletics by winning the women’s marathon on Sunday 11 August 2024.
Hassan completed the race with a remarkable Olympic record time of 2:22:55, capping off a spectacular performance that saw her secure a total of three medals at the Games.
The 31-year-old Dutch runner, who had already won bronze in both the 5000m and 10,000m events earlier in the Games, faced fierce competition from Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa. Assefa finished just seconds behind Hassan, taking silver with a time of 2:22:58.
Kenya’s Hellen Obiri claimed the bronze medal with a personal best time of 2:23:10, rounding out the podium in a thrilling marathon race.
