Google to Update Content Restrictions namely Shocking Content, Websites with Ads may get affected

In the move to provide clearer guidelines for content creators and publishers, Google has announced an upcoming Content Restrictions name it “Shocking content.” The update is set to take effect on 30 August 2023.

Under the revised guidelines, Alphabet the parent Company says they’ll make an exception for gameplay imagery in the context of Shocking content. The company defines Shocking content as material that contains gruesome, graphic, or disgusting accounts or imagery and also depicts acts of violence.

However, with the latest update, content featuring gameplay imagery will only be considered to violate these restrictions if it portrays specific types of violent acts. The acts that will fall under the category of Shocking content include depictions of torture, sexual violence, violence against minors, violence against prominent real-name persons, or violence against an individual or group based on characteristics associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization.

The change is aimed at providing more clarity and specific criteria for determining what constitutes shocking content within the context of gameplay imagery. By narrowing down the definition, Google seeks to strike a balance between allowing creative expression within video game content while still ensuring the platform remains free from excessively violent or offensive material.

Google has provided examples to illustrate what will be considered Shocking content, including:

Gruesome or Graphic Imagery: This includes content that displays blood, guts, gore, sexual fluids, human or animal waste, crime scene or accident photos.

Depiction of Acts of Violence: Examples of this category involve accounts or images of shootings, explosions, bombings, and execution videos.

Obscene or Profane Language: Content that contains a significant amount of or prominently features swear or curse words, variations, and misspellings of profane language.

By updating the Restrictions, Google aims to create a safer and more welcoming environment for users while respecting the diverse nature of gaming content and of sites/apps.

Content creators and publishers are urged to review the revised guidelines carefully to ensure their site and app comply with the new rules, starting from August 30, 2023.
